FBLearning are currently delivering Mental Health First Aid 2 day programs in Maitland.
The program teaches people (18 years and over) how to offer initial support to adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
Any interested adult can attend. Please note this course is not a therapy or support group, rather it is an education course to learn how to give aid to others.
Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Developing mental health problems covered are:
- Depression
- Anxiety problems
- Psychosis
- Substance use problems.
Mental health crisis situations covered are:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
- Severe psychotic states
- Aggressive behaviours.
Our Instructor has spent the past 12 years working with Mission Australia in the Upper Hunter and Western NSW as an Area Manager, managing a range of mental health recovery and drug and alcohol programs in regional, rural and remote communities.
What are people saying about the program:
Great Experience – I highly recommend the program. Gives great insight to Mental Illness and how to manage it in certain situations.
The stand-out aspect of the program was the information and detail. The facilitator showed respect with all questions we asked and explained in detail if we were stuck or needed more clarification. The pictures and graphs used were perfect and content was amazing.
I highly recommend the program. It was a great weekend in a relaxed, supportive environment (considering the topics covered). The stand-out aspect of the program was learning deeper about depression and anxiety. The trainer was an excellent presenter, he was very knowledgeable about the subject.
I have spent my weekend completing a course in Mental Health First Aid and I would recommend it to everyone, whilst I’m no expert, I’ve learned a lot about human behavior and recognition in my life (and will continue to learn more) but I got so much out of this weekend.
